By March the group was laying ambushes for the procurement of weapons and food supplies from the German contributors. Tuvia was elected as leader and made it clear, â€Å"the primary objective of the group was not to kill Germans, but to save the Jews.† Word of the group soon found its way to the ghettos, Tuvia’s integrity followed with the information, â€Å"Tuvia knew the value of life.† One Jew saved was a spite to the Germans, more spite than killing ten Germans. The respect he received was admirable on all levels and are what made him truly an asset to the group. Some of the local farmers were allies to the group, gentiles willing to sacrifice and to help the men. Some of the farmers would even send those who escaped the ghettos to the woods to find the group. Attempting to leave the ghettos carried a harsh punishment for anyone, death by hanging. The Jews resilient in their efforts of escape from the Ghetto dug a tunnel with only forks and spoons allowing the over two hundred and fifty remaining captive Jews an escape to the woods in some hope of survival. Only one hundred and seventy men, women, and children survived to reach the partisans in the woods because of Nazi firepower but the power of the group would soon double. Over two hundred Jews were now assembled in the woods.
